“Easters to Come” – Piqua, Ohio (1913)

Mrs. Laura Wolaver lived on a rural route outside Piqua, a city on the Great Miami River in Miami County of west-central Ohio.

This city, 27 miles upstream of Dayton, was devastated in the Great Dayton Flood on Easter week-end of 1913.

Then, days of torrential rain falling on land that was still frozen, overwhelmed the flood plain on which many communities of greater Dayton had been established.

It was the greatest natural disaster in Ohio history.

A few years ago, we saw another postcard story related to this disaster.

Sometime before Easter in 1913, Laura received a postcard from Flo and her family.

The postcard was not mailed, so it is unclear how far the postcard had traveled.

The form of the address, “Mrs. Laura Wolaver”, would commonly be used for a widow.

The face of the postcard is a drawing of a magnificent cross illuminating a bright blue sky.

A landscape of hills and trees is suggested by the indistinct lines and the coloration of the sketch.

A few lines of ornamental script communicate the Easter greeting:

“Here is merely / A Good Wish

Enclosed in an / Easter Message”

In a smaller font, the wish is elaborated:

“The wish holds good for all days / Including Easters to come”

The postcard was printed in the United States and was copyrighted by E. Nash, who appears to be the publisher.

On the reverse, Flo notes the date of “Easter 1913”.

Addressing “Dear Laura”, Flo reports that “We are all well” and that “Mollie is coming down to spend Easter with us”.

Flo asks, “Come down too, can’t you”.

The message includes the names, “Flo, Lawrence, and Enos”.

One hopes that Mrs. Wolaver and Flo’s family escaped the destruction of the flood and that all gathered safely and enjoyed a wonderful Easter.
