Elmer Gives Grace Her Name – Long Island, Kansas (circa 1908)

Miss Grace Rhodes lived in Long Island, a very small city in northern Kansas – not far from the border of Nebraska.

A thriving agricultural community was established here in 1869, but a devastating invasion of locusts in 1874 caused settlers to flee.

The city was re-founded when the railroad was built through the area in 1885.

Sometime before 1910 (the final number of the postmark is obscured), Grace received a postcard from Elmer Lindsey.

I cannot determine Elmer’s location, but he placed the stamp upside down.

Many persons in the early 20th century used stamp placement as a secret language or code.

The upside down stamp often meant, “I love you”, but modern commentators have widely-divergent interpretations of these signals of the last century.

The face of the postcard is a colorful name card -the word”Grace” appears with bright blossoms.

The postcard was printed by the noted English form of Raphael Tuck & Sons and is from the “Name Series”.

Like other Tuck postcards we have seen, this postcard was printed in Saxony.

On the reverse, Elmer inscribes no message but his name.

One hopes that Grace was thrilled to see Elmer’s expression of love, and that the two enjoyed a delightful romance.
