Ada is Invited to the Camp Meeting – Elizabethtown, PA (1912)

Ada Brandt lived near Elizabethtown, a college town in western Lancaster County, Pennsylvania.

In July of 1912, Miss Ada Brandt received a postcard from her friend, Naomi B.

The postcard from Naomi featured a hand-colored photograph of a field of sweet potatoes.

Naomi mailed the postcard from the borough of Mount Joy, PA (about 6 miles from Elizabethtown).

Naomi urges Ada to “come down here on Saturday and go along with me to camp meeting on Sunday”.

Camp meetings (outdoor gatherings for Bible study, preaching, and singing) drew crowds throughout Lancaster County during the early 20th century.

Earlier postcard stories mentioned camp meetings in Landisville, Rawlinsville, and Central Manor (Washington Boro).  There were many others.

Ada was expected to travel by trolley; Naomi asks her to share what time she will come and where she will “get off the car”.

Naomi would meet her.

We have other postcards related to Miss Brandt, including some that were sent after her marriage to Clayton Hollinger.

Alas, we do not know if the excursion to the camp meeting was accomplished.

One hopes that the friends were able to attend the camp meeting in the summer of 1912.
