Saint Patrick’s Day – 1908
Ethel must have been busy or forgetful as she mailed her St. Patrick’s Day postcard on March 19, 1908.
Illustrated by a drawing of a young woman playing the harp, the postcard bears the legend, “The Maid of Erin”.
One stanza of a nostalgic poem by the Irish poet, Thomas Moore, is printed below the picture.
(One is struck by the depth of longing and homesickness that many Irish immigrants experienced.
Many postcards and illustrations depicting “the old country” abound in the stalls of antique dealers.
This site does not address music, but there were many popular songs at the turn of the 20th century that expressed the sadness of folks remembering their former homes.)
This postcard was posted in Millersville and addressed to Miss Lottie Clarke on North Mary Street in Lancaster.
Mary Street has an abundance of charming older homes; one hopes that Lottie’s residence survives.
