Fannie Sends Birdland to Her Aunt – Des Moines, Iowa (1907)

Mrs. H. Stryker lived in Chicago, Illinois.

In June of 1907, she received a postcard greeting from her niece, Fannie.

Jammie mailed the postcard from Des Moines, the capital city on the Des Moines and Racoon Rivers near the center of Iowa.

In 1907, Des Moines was embarking on a large public building project which erected handsome Beaux Arts buildings downtown and which beautified the riverfront.

(Today, Des Moines is the home to large insurance, publishing, and healthcare companies.)

The face of the postcard bears a hand-colored photograph of Birdland Park.

The postcard was published by Enos B. Hunt, Jr. of Des Moines.

Today, this park boasts a marina on the Des Moines River and a lake around which picnicking, hiking, and other recreational facilities are found.

One hopes that Mrs. Stryker was pleased by the postcard from her niece, and that Fannie enjoyed her youth in Des Moines.
