“Fun in the Breakers” – Dover, Delaware (1909)

Mr. Jeb Hopkins lived in Dover, the small (and charming) city that is the capital of Delaware.

Dover is “downstate”, outside the more populous and industrialized northern county around Wilmington.

In August of 1909, Jeb received a postcard from V. M. C.

There are few clues about the relationship between the correspondents, although the message strikes a tone of familiarity.

The postcard was mailed, like millions of others, from Atlantic City.

This resort on the Atlantic coast of southeast New Jersey was one of the most-visited vacation destinations of the early 20th century.

The face of the postcard is a hand-colored photograph of a family, the members attired in bulky swimming costumes, enjoying the surf.

The postcard was published by the Chilton Printing Company of Philadelphia.

On the reverse, the sender includes a message that has a pleasing ambiguity.

“If I had you here we would have some fun in these breakers.”

This message seems, to me, to suggest something more than harmless jumping of the waves.

As we experience the early arrival of the hot and humid days of Summer, the image of a seaside vacation looks inviting.

One hopes that the writer continued to enjoy Atlantic City, and that the correspondents remained friends for many years.
