Grandpa Climbs Into the “Room Tree”

Grandpa Climbs Into the “Room Tree” – circa 1938

There were many natural attractions at Sequoia National Park and vintage postcards captured a few of them.

Because a tree’s feeding system is the vascular layer just “inside” the bark, large trees such as Sequoias can continue to live even after chunks of the interior have been damaged or hollowed. (Of course, the tree may be structurally weakened and more vulnerable to falling.)

Sometime before 1940, Grandpa’s visit to the “Room Tree” was commemorated on a souvenir postcard published for the Sequoia National Park.

The hand-colored postcard photograph shows a rustic ladder leading to a “room” within a Sequoia tree.

A message on the reverse is addressed to “Tommie”, but the postcard was not mailed.

“Grand Pa climbed this big tree and came down on the inside.

I wish you could see the big bear and the deer.”
