“Hallie Has a Baby” – Akeley, PA (1915)

Mrs. Etta Brogan lived in Warren, the largest city and county seat of Warren County of northwest Pennsylvania.

Warren, on the Allegheny River, is the headquarters of the Allegheny National Forest.

In July of 1915, Etta received a Birth Announcement from Mr. and Mrs. N. S. Holt.

The Holts had a baby, and mailed a printed postcard announcement of the birth.

The Holts inscribed their address as Russell, PA – an unincorporated community on the Conewango Creek in Pine Grove Township of Warren County in northwest Pennsylvania.

The postcard, however was mailed from Akeley – a census-designated place adjacent to Russell, on the north.

The Post Office in Akeley was closed in 1963 – the current census lists no inhabitants of Akeley.

The face of the postcard is a generic announcement of a baby – the parents would fill in the data about the time of birth and the gender and weight of the new-born baby.

The baby, not yet named, weighed 6 ¼ pounds.

A cute drawing of a stork bearing a baby in a bundle provides a colorful heading to the printed text.

On the reverse, the new mother seems to have written her own message on the announcement.

The message is signed by “Hallie”.

Hallie reports, “It’s a boy, but haven’t named it (sic) yet.”

Mother declares, “I am feeling fine”; she has “a woman to do the work”.

Additionally, Hallie “sent my other boys home with Ma.”

One hopes that the Holts decided upon a name for the baby, that Hallie continued to do well, that the baby and the “other boys” enjoyed happiness and security in the 20th century.

Genealogical Note

Nathaniel Sill Holt (1885-1940) was born on the Cornplanter Indian Reservation in Elk County, PA.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cornplanter_Tract

His parents were Peter Clemens Holt (1851-1931) and Ella B. Sill (1850-1903).

Nathaniel had one sister.

Sometime around 1908, Nathan married Hallie Grace Martin (1887-1984).

Nathaniel and Hallie had five sons and one daughter.

Sons – Richard, Cecil, and Donald were born between 1909-1913.

These are “my boys” that Hallie sent home with Ma.

On July 6 of 1915, the baby named (eventually) Howard Clemens Holt was born in Akeley.

Howard’s arrival was announced by this postcard.

I can find very few documents related to Howard -he did not marry, and he died in 1996.

Nathaniel died in 1940, at age 55, and is buried in the town of Russell.

Hallie lived until her 97th year, and is buried in Russell, PA.

The youngest child of Nathaniel and Hallie – the daughter, Norine, did not marry.

She died, in Texas, in 2018.

I assume that this charming postcard about Howard’s birth probably descended to antique dealers at that time.
