How to Have Friends – Inspirational Motto of 1909

Here is another example of an inspirational postcard motto; this one featuring a decorative border of Art Nouveau designs that prefigures the Art Deco movement.

The art postcard was published by the Stationers Specialty Company of Buffalo, New York.

Copyright in 1909, the postcard was probably printed in the same year.

Unfortunately, this example of postcard art was never addressed not mailed, so we do not know who might have collected it.

The sentiment of the motto is ancient – if you want to have friends, you must act friendly.

In the Biblical book of Proverbs, we read, “A man that hath friends must shew himself friendly” (Proverbs 18:24).

For readers of the early 20th century, the saying of Ralph Waldo Emerson was equally familiar: “The only way to have a friend is to be one.”

Despite the antiquity of the admonition, and the reasonableness of the motto, there are some who seem unable to grasp its meaning.
