It’s Crowded in Atlantic City

It’s Crowded in Atlantic City — 1932

In the summer of 1932, Mrs. Lee Wolf was living in Ephrata, PA.

Mrs. Wolf received a comic postcard from a visitor to Atlantic City.

The postcard shows vacationers sleeping on rooftops, telephone wires, chimneys, and poles.

In truth, vast numbers of people streamed to the Jersey shore each summer; there were boarding houses and campgrounds stretching far from the hotels near the beach.

The writer seems to have forgotten the street address for Mrs. Wolf; the helpful notation, “Next to the schoolhouse. Franklin St.” is added to the reverse of the postcard.

The postcard was mailed from Atlantic City on August 26.

One hopes that the vacationer was able to enjoy the busy beach and that Mrs. Wolf was amused by the postcard.
