“Leapfrog” – Perry, Maine (1905)

Miss Virginia Bugbee lived in Perry, a town on the St. Croix River in east-central Maine.

Although the community began as a trading post in 1758, the town took the name of Oliver Hazard Perry – hero of the War of 1812.

Sometime around 1905, Virginia was given a postcard with an illustration of children playing “Leapfrog”.

(This children’s game has existed by this name at least since the 16th century.)

The postcard illustration was made by Bernhardt Wall, a prolific illustrator who later designed US propaganda posters during World War I.

On the face, one child demonstrates the proper form for jumping over his playmate.

The child who is being overflown has lost his straw hat.

The happy scene was published by the Ullman Company of New York in 1905.

We do not know if the postcard marked a birthday or special occasion for Virginia – there is no further inscription.

Preserved in very good condition for more than a century, the postcard seems to have been treasured by Virginia.
