Alice Cleaver lived in York Springs, a resort community in Adams County.
(We met Alice in an earlier postcard story about attending the York Fair.)
In March of 1909, Alice received a postcard from her friend, Ellie Deardorff, who lived in Hanover, PA
Hanover, a center of shoe-manufacturing, is in neighboring York County – about 27 miles southeast of York Springs.
The face of the postcard depicts a young woman, attired in a billowing skirt, sitting on a bench.
A young man, wearing a suit, bends toward the woman.
The legend explains the flirtatious moment – will the young woman gather her skirt to provide room for the young man to sit down.
The meeting of their eyes suggests that the two will share the bench.
On the reverse, Ellie inquires how Alice “is getting along” and asks when she might visit Hanover.
One hopes that the friends were able to meet in the Spring of 1909 and that their correspondence continued for many years.
