Louis Is Coming on the Train – New York, NY (1908)

Louis Lowenfeld was coming to see his brother.

The brother, Mr. A. Lowenfeld, worked at the Madison Square Station in Manhattan.

(I have been unable to find documentation of a Post Office or a Rail Station at Madison Square in 1908.)

In August of 1908, Louis sent a postcard to announce his plan.

The message reads:

“I am coming to N.Y. on the 10:30 train”.

Brother can expect to see Louis in mid-afternoon as “the train will be in N.Y. at 2:44.

Louis mailed the postcard from Lancaster, PA in August of 1908.

One hundred and fifteen years later, this trip is about one hour faster.

(A quick internet search shows that a a firm bearing the name of Lowenfeld was involved in the tobacco business.

It is possible that Louis was connected to the many tobacco warehouses that once lined Prince Street in Lancaster.)

The face of the postcard is a charming photograph of a young girl standing against a painted backdrop of a seaside scene.

A printed legend asks, “Are you ready?”.

The postcard photograph was made and published by Davidson Brothers of London and New York.

This is from the “Real Photographic Series”, it was printed in England.

One hopes that Louis was able to complete the trip as planned and that he was welcomed by his brother at Madison Square.
