“Love to Iola” – Ashland, Ohio (1911)

Miss Iola Taylor was living In Ashland, a city and the County seat of Ashland County in north-central Ohio.

The city was named for the country estate of Henry Clay, the formidable Senator from Ohio during the first half of the 19th century.

In the early 20th century, the city of Ashland was the home to many manufacturing plants.

It seems that Iola may be a hired girl or a boarder; she is identified within the household of Sam Miller.

In June of 1911, Iola received a postcard greeting from Nellie & Walt.

The postcard was mailed from Canton, a city and county seat of Stark County in the northeast quadrant of Ohio.

The convergence of railroad lines made Canton a manufacturing powerhouse in the early 20th century -it is 20 miles south of Akron.

By contrast, the area around Canton is primarily agricultural and now home to a large Amish community.

Ashland is almost 60 miles west of Canton.

The face of the postcard shows an anchor composed of flowers – violets and daisies.

The design is embossed, which can be seen most clearly on the reverse.

Beside the flowery anchor is a printed greeting: “With My Love”.

On the reverse, Nellie greets Iola as, “My own sister”.

It is not clear if this is a sign of affection or if Iola is related to Nellie.

Iola may be celebrating a birthday (or an engagement, or marriage), as Nellie writes, “With best wishes and hopes, I am sending you this card.”

Nellie also extends an invitation, “We are OK and hope to have you come soon.”

Nellie (and Walt) sent the postcard, “Lovingly”.

Iola seems to have been pleased by the postcard, she preserved it in good condition throughout her life.

We may hope that she enjoyed happiness and prosperity, and that she was able to visit Nellie and Walt in Canton.
