Maude Rhinehart lived in Jewett, a village in Harrison County of east-central Ohio.
The village was once served by a railroad line and, for a few years, was the home of a manufacturing plant for trolley cars.

In December of 1916, Maude sent a Christmas postcard to her friend – Miss Sarah Wilcox.
Sarah lived in Angelica, a town in Allegheny County of southwest New York State.
The town was named for Angelica Schuyler Church, sister-in-law of Alexander Hamilton.

The face of the postcard is a medallion drawing of a bell hung in a belfry, the frame adorned with branches of holly.
Beneath the image is a printed greeting, “Best Wishes for Christmas”.
On the reverse, Maude greets Miss Wilcox and says, “I think of you so much”.
Maude had an eventful year.
She reports, “We have sold our farm and have stored our goods.”
The circumstances of this change are not described.
After sharing the news about her change of condition, Maude devotes her attention to Sarah – “Hope you are well and had a successful year”.
About Miss Wilcox, Maude writes, “I know you are happy in your work.”
It appears that the friends may have been closer at one time: Maude wishes that she was “near enough to talk to you occasionally”.
To continue their correspondence, Maude informs Sarah that “any mail sent to Steubenville will be forwarded to me.”
Maude’s communication is so clear and precise, without a tinge of discontent or regret, that I wonder if she had taught school or had other practice in maintaining exquisite poise.
One hopes that Sarah responded quickly to her friend, that Maude’s situation was resolved happily, and that there was a merry celebration of Christmas in Jewett and in Angelica.
