Nathan’s Girlfriend Cannot Speak Aloud – Lake Placid, NY (1911)

Nathan Turk worked in the Syracuse Savings Bank Building, a landmark in downtown Syracuse, NY.

Syracuse was then (and now) the commercial, education, and transportation center of central New York.

In September of 1911, Nathan was at work while his friend, S. H., was visiting natural wonders in New York State.

Nathan received a postcard with a dramatic photograph of Ausable Chasm, a remarkable canyon formed by the Ausable River flowing through tall sandstone cliffs in the Adirondack Mountains near Lake Champlain.

This spot remains a favorite place for hiking, scenic tours, and water sports.

The postcard was published by the Leighton & Valentine Company of New York.

S. H. Mailed the postcard from Lake Placid, a village founded for mining iron ore which became a fashionable resort in the late 19th century.

Lake Placid lies in northern New York State, about 37 miles southwest of Ausable Chasm.

On the reverse, S. H. invites Nathan to “come up and we will drive up here.”

Unfortunately, S. H. has become “so hoarse I can hardly speak aloud”.

She promises, “(I) will to write tomorrow”.

Nathan Turk can be found on-line, so it is possible to understand more of the story from this postcard.

I believe the S. H. who sent the postcard is Sarah Holdridge, who later married Nathan Turk.

Nathan Turk was born in New York State about 1886.

Sarah Holdridge was born in New York State about 1888.

I believe that Nathan and Sarah were married a few years after this postcard was exchanged between them.

Nathan and Sarah had one daughter, Catherine, who was born about 1916.

Nathan had a distinguished law career as District Attorney for Tioga County and as a Judge.

Nathan also served as Grand Master for the Masonic Order in New York State.

Catherine also pursued a career in law and was a partner in her father’s firm.
