Ruth Forgets to Answer – Marietta, PA (1911)

Miss Elizabeth McFarland lived at 319 North Lime Street in Lancaster.

Her small brick house, built in 1865, is still occupied on the site.

The building now contains more than one living unit.

On line, one can find a photograph of the house from a realty company.

In February of 1911, Elizabeth received a postcard greeting from her friend, Ruth, who lived in Marietta.

The face of the postcard is adorned with an embossed illustration of swans pulling a small boat laden with forget-me-nots.

The flower should have been shared with the sender as it seems Ruth neglected to respond to her friend, Elizabeth.

On the reverse, Ruth writes, “I forgot (to) answer your card…”.

Ruth asks Elizabeth to “excuse me this time”.

This postcard illustration was very popular circa 1910 – I have several postcards of the same design, although they do not have identical hand-coloring.

The postcard was printed in Germany.

One hopes that Elizabeth enjoyed the postcard, that she was able to overlook Ruth’s forgetfulness, and that the two remained correspondents for many years.
