Taking the Train to New York – Allentown, PA (circa 1905)

Harry S. may have intended to mail this postcard featuring a hand-colored photograph of the railroad terminal in Allentown.

The photograph was made and published by A.C. Bosselman & Co. of New York; the postcard was printed in Germany.

Harry inscribed the face with a message, “Here is where I take the train for New York”.

The photograph was taken in the very early years of the twentieth century; at that time, Harry could take a direct train across the 90 miles to New York City.

More than a hundred years later, public transportation is far worse than it was in 1905.

Today, one would have to take the train to Philadelphia and from there to New York City, a journey that more than doubles the distance.

The recent Infrastructure Plan that was passed by Congress calls for the restoration of rail service between Allentown and New York.

This is good news for any contemporary folks like Harry!
