The Conestoga from Rocky Springs

The Conestoga from Rocky Springs – 1909 Mr. Guy Dunlap was living in Wilkinsburg, Pa when he received a postcard from his friend, M. I. Sellers.

(Wilkinsburg is a borough in Allegheny County, very close to Pittsburgh.)

Printed in Great Britain, the postcard features a hand-colored photograph of the Conestoga River at Rocky Springs.

Mailed from Lancaster on August 15, 1909, the postcard was probably received the next day.

(A postmark at Wilkinsburg could not be distinguished in the marks on the face of the card.)

On the reverse, Mr. Sellers writes that he is “having a fine time” during his visit to Lancaster.

He notes that the Conestoga is “what they go canoeing on over here”, but acknowledges that the River “has some length to it.”

As someone who grew up with a love of canoeing on the Conestoga, I am overlooking the unenthusiastic remarks of the writer.
