The Conowingo Dam – circa 1950
The Conowingo Dam is the third of the three great hydro-electric dams on the lower Susquehanna.
Constructed between 1925 and 1928 by the Philadelphia Electric Company, the Conowingo Dam is (after numerous mergers and consolidations) now part of the Exelon Corporation.
At the time of completion, the Conowingo Dam was the second largest producer of electrical power in the US, exceeded only by Niagara Falls.
The reservoir of about 9000 acres covers the original town of Conowingo, Md.
This dramatic postcard view was printed and distributed by the Philadelphia Electric Company.
The history of the Dam includes many dramatic moments such as the occasions when river towns below the dam were evacuated due to fears that the dam would be breeched by flood waters from ice jams or ice melts.
