The custom of sending a family picture to friends at Christmas is an old one.

In 1916, Mrs Watts (?) received a postcard photograph from her friends, the Martins.
It is not a studio portrait, but a posed photograph along (what appears to be) the lane to the family farm.
On the reverse, one of the Martins writes, “It is a good likeness of all of us except Edith and Harold…”.
There appear to be five children, four boys and a girl.
We might assume that Edith and Harold are two of the children whose appearance in the photograph does do them justice – they could be additional children or an older children who are now married and living in another place.
Each of the family members is neatly dressed.
Except for squinting a bit in the sunlight, each appears to be happy.
Because the postcard was not mailed, it is not possible to identify the location of the Martins or of Mrs. Watts.
One hopes that they all enjoyed the holiday season of 1916.
