The Public Library – Reading, PA (circa 1910)

This is not the grand Public Library building, funded by Andrew Carnegie, that was completed in 1913.

The website of the Reading Public Library contains a remarkable history of the successive endeavors to organize and fund a Library in Reading.

The efforts began in 1763.

A more concise history can be found on the Wiki.

I believe that this postcard photograph depicts the Reading Library when it was housed in the former Odd Fellows Hall.

That building (pictured here), erected in 1847, was found to have substantial damage to the foundation and walls, and had to be evacuated in 1910.

Fortunately for the citizens of Reading, this handsome building at the corner of Fifth and Franklin Streets was replaced by a larger library.
