The Sesquicentennial Arches of York

The Sesquicentennial Arches of York – 1899

In 1899, the city of York celebrated the 150th anniversary of its founding.

Large memorial arches were erected in the center of the city.

I am not sure how long the arches were maintained there; they are pictured on a postcard photograph postmarked in 1905.

On August 22, 1905, Walter Gasser sent a postcard to his wife in Reading.

Because postal regulations required that the reverse of the card be used only for an address, Walter squeezed a tiny message onto the face of the card.

Walter wrote: “My dear wife, I am well. Business good. From here I go to Hanover. Walter”

The postcard was mailed from York.
