The Young Woman of Reading, PA – circa 1910)

In the early 20th century, the city of Reading, PA was a bustling center of industry, commerce, and transportation.

The city boasted numerous photography studios, but most of the postcard photographs that I have collected are from the Fritz Studio.

We have seen other photographic portraits from this studio, some of which are identified with names.

This lovely photograph of a young woman lacks a name or an indication of the date the portrait was taken.

Although many photographs were taken to mark milestones such as marriage engagements or school graduations, other photos were made to communicate with distant friends or family members.

Sometime around 1910, this young woman sat for her photograph; we do not know if it commemorated a special event.

Our heroine seems relaxed and poised, her well-lit face projects self-confidence.

Although her hair is worn “up”, the woman sports a blouse that has a low, relaxed collar -suggesting that the photo could have been taken a few years after 1910.

One hopes that she, like many young women who were making their own way in the world, was happy and prosperous in the coming decades.
