Welcome to Baby “Mabel”- Boyertown, PA (1919)

Mabel Moyer was an infant when she was greeted with a postcard celebrating her arrival in 1919.

The colorful illustration on face of the postcard includes a verse expressing hope that “your dullest day be bright as morning sun”.

Mabel lived in a rural area outside the borough of Boyertown, a small community in eastern Berks County, PA.

The borough borders Montgomery County.

The sender of the welcoming message is identified only as “me”.

The postcard was mailed from Pottstown, PA, then a prosperous industrial town of iron and steel interests.

Today, the area is largely given to agricultural and dairy production.

I don’t know if the practice of sending welcoming messages to newborns is still observed.

My mother kept a bundle of such messages that were received from friends, relatives, and neighbors when I was born.

One hopes that Mabel enjoyed a long life characterized by bright moments, as the postcard verse expresses.
