“A Trio with Scrolls” – Circa 1910

This postcard photograph was not mailed, and there is no reference to the date, location, or identity of the persons in the photograph.

Embossed letters at the bottom right of the face identify the “Janson Studio”.

There is an on-line reference to a photography studio by this name in Wisconsin, circa 1910, but I cannot ascribe this photograph to that studio with certainty.

Sometime near 1910, perhaps a few years before, three young people celebrated a milestone or achievement with this group photograph.

There are two men and one woman.

The young woman is wearing a long white dress; her hair is “up” “in a braid or twist.

The young men are wearing suits with wide lapels.

At first glance, I thought the young man seated in the center might be wearing a double-breasted suit (a style much more popular in a later era) – but the suit is not double-breasted.

This seems to be an honorary occasion; each member of the trio is sporting a corsage or boutonniere on the left breast.

Each of the young people is holding a scroll – which could denote an academic achievement or award.

I assume that the young man seated in the center has won the highest award and so has taken the place of honor.

He also seems to be better-outfitted than his male companion – he sports a light bow tie and gleaming cuff links.

(He also appears to be better groomed.)

As was customary in photographs of this period, the three look solemn and unenthusiastic about the proceedings.

One looks in vain for any detail that might shed more light on this event.

One hopes that the trio were pleased by the recognition afforded to them and that they fulfilled the promise of their early achievements.
