“Will Christian Go to Communion?” – Elizabethtown, PA (1910)

Mt. Christian Moyer lived in Elizabethtown, a borough in western Lancaster County of southeast Pennsylvania.

At the turn of the 20th century, Elizabethtown (about 18 miles southeast of Harrisburg) had numerous small factories.

Beginning in 1899, the community of Elizabethtown was enlarged by students entering the newly-constructed Elizabethtown College.

(We met Christian Moyer several years ago; he received numerous Birthday postcards from female friends: “The Birthday of Christian Moyer”)

In April of 1910, Christian received a postcard from an unidentified friend.

The postcard was mailed from Elizabethtown, so we may assume that this was a greeting from a neighbor, classmate, or fellow Church member.

The face of the postcard is a deeply-embossed branch laden with fruit.

At first, I thought that these were grapes, but I now suspect that it is a crowded cluster of cherries.

A careless postmaster placed a receiving postmark over part of the bunch -and I made some digital repairs to the face.

On the reverse, the embossed design obscures the written message.

It seems that the writer has received an unsigned postcard from Christian, and has guessed that he was the sender.

Interestingly, the sender also asks if Christian is “going to Communion on Sunday”.

I believe that Christian (and the sender) are Mennonites, and the custom of the church was to have Communion on designated Sundays – once in the Spring, and once in the Fall.

Christian saved this postcard (and his many other greetings) throughout his life.

One hopes that he was able to partake of the Spring Communion and that he continued to enjoy a robust correspondence with friends.
