“Greetings and Goodwill” – Postcard Motto (circa 1908)

This postcard was not mailed, so we do not know who might have admired or collected the charming scene.

Postcard mottos were very popular in the early 20th century – the variety of topics and imagery resembles the production of graphic memes today.

We have seen other inspirational or motivational postcard mottoes:

Don’t Do It By Halves”, “Get Busy”, ”To Have Friends

The face of this postcard displays a quiet scene of an unpaved lane beside a pond.

A small boat floats on the water although no child is playing nearby.

Green fields and meadows stretch toward some distant activity.

Around the drawing is a frame of leaves and bright red roses.

A legend proclaims, “Greetings and good-will”.

On the reverse, the publisher’s logo identifies “T. P. and Company, NY”, – which is the Taylor Pratt Company of New York City.

It seems that the postcard with a general greeting was designed for use on multiple occasions.

It is also a gentle reminder of the generous and open-handed approach toward others that once characterized most Americans.
