Chester Asks Ruth an Important Question – Mulberry, Kansas (1916)

Miss Ruth Hopper lived in Mulberry, a small city in southeast Kansas.

The place was named for wild mulberries that once grew there.

In May of 1916, Ruth received a postcard from Chester who wrote from a train station in Kansas City.

The face of the postcard is a photograph of a smiling woman sitting demurely before an arbor.

A well-dressed young man bends to her and holds her hand.

The legend asks awkwardly, “Well, Honey, How Do You Think You Like Me?”

On the reverse, Chester apologizes for failing to write sooner and promises to “write a letter tonight”.

It does not seem advisable to neglect one’s correspondence and to ask for an appraisal at the same time.

Nevertheless, one hopes that Ruth overlooked Chester’s tardiness and that the two remained friends and correspondents for a long time.
