“Daddy” in York – circa 1910

Sometime around 1910, this portrait was made by the photography studio of Simon & Murnane at 227 West Market Street in York.

It was preserved by one of the children of this man; “Daddy” is inscribed on the reverse.

I found it at an antique mall in Columbia, PA.

Photographs like this one often end up in dealers’ stalls after the child who treasured the photograph has passed on.

Few people realize that photographs are likely to endure for multiple generations.

The child of this man probably thought it redundant or ridiculous to inscribe Daddy’s name on the photograph. But, a name would help us learn more about the life that was commemorated by the picture.

I find that portraits like this one help me to imagine the lives of the people who lived or shared the sidewalks of York more than a century ago.
