J. J. Writes to His Friend in the Army – Lincoln, Nebraska (1907)

Mr. Semons was in the army, and stationed at Fort Riley in north-central Kansas.

The large Army Base had been established in the mid-19th century to protect settlers moving west on the Oregon, California, and Santa Fe Trails.

In October of 1907, Mr. Semons received a postcard from an old friend, J. J., who was in Lincoln, Nebraska.

It seems that J.J. and Mr. Semons had been in the habit of meeting for drinks occasionally.

J.J. writes, “Wish you could join us in a drink”.

The face of the postcard bears a small, hand-colored photograph of a girl feeding a donkey.

The postcard had been printed a few years earlier – it has an “undivided back” that permits only an address to be written.

J.J. added a further note, “I hate writing – I will write soon”.

One hopes that Mr. Semons enjoyed hearing from his friend and that, at a later time, the pair were able to “catch up” over a drink.
