“Merrily We Roll Along” – Bart, PA (1912)

Miss Edna Frackman lived in Bart, a township in southeast Lancaster County, PA.

(This rural area remains largely devoted to agriculture; today, more than 50% of the township residents speak a Pennsylvania-German dialect.)

In February of 1912, Edna received a postcard from Sam, who appears to be a classmate of Edna.

It may be that this humorous postcard was intended as a Valentine – the figures on the face have heart-shaped faces.

The face of the postcard shows a boy and a girl on roller skates.

(We have seen several other postcards circa 1910 that relate to the love of roller-skating.)

In this drawing, the young skaters appear to be in a roller rink – they are standing on a wooden floor and the trunk-like post seems to support a roof.

The girl, wearing a small hat and a green jacket, holds onto a wooden post or pillar.

The boy, wearing a brown suit and a large cap, appears to be steady on his roller skates.

The drawing has a simple and unrefined quality.

I could not find any indication of a printer or publisher.

On the reverse, Sam has nicely inscribed the date of February 16, 1912.

He adds a brief remark, “Be careful at school”.

It is not clear if the admonition about safety related to roller skating or to some other threat.

One hopes that Edna and Sam enjoyed their classes and their recreation, and that they remained correspondents for many years.
