Some Geese for Mrs. Huyett – Birdsboro, PA (1908)

Mrs. Elmer Huyett lived in Birdsboro, a borough on the Schuylkill River in Berks County of southeast Pennsylvania.

Until the mid-20th century, Birdsboro boasted foundries and machine shops.

In June of 1908, Mrs. Huyett received a lovely art postcard.

Because the postcard was mailed from Birdsboro, we may assume that it was from a correspondent who lived nearby.

The sender (possibly, two senders) has inscribed the initials, H. D.  H. L.

If this an abbreviation for a phrase or popular saying, I am unfamiliar with it.

The face of the postcard bears a hand-colored example of original art.

A large tree spreads over a tranquil stream on which a group of boaters are passing leisurely.

White geese feed or preen on the grassy bank, and on the edge of the reedy marsh across the stream.

The charming drawing is not titled, and there is no indication of the artist.

On the reverse, the sender has not inscribed a message – which leaves us to guess the occasion for which the postcard was offered and to imagine the relationship of the sender to Mrs. Huyett.

It seems that Mrs. Huyett appreciated the postcard as it was preserved throughout her life.

To better appreciate the postcard art. I removed (digitally) the initials inscribed on the face.
