The Chronicle Mills – Belmont, North Carolina (1906)

The Chronicle Mill was constructed along the Southern Norfolk Railway line in downtown Belmont in 1902.

This construction was part of the wave of textile industries that were established in the Carolinas during the early 20th century.

A bit of postcard correspondence links us to this historical development.

(Sometime between 1902 and 1906, “Chronicle Mill” became “Chronicle Mills”.)

In 1906, the Chronicle Mills ordered brass piping from the Buffalo Forge in Buffalo, New York.

The pipes were for a “humidifying system” at the plant.

(The intense heat and humidity of the textile-making process led Chronicle Mills to become the first textile manufacturer to hire the Carrier Company to design air-conditioning for the plant.)

One notes the very formal and respectful language of the business communication of 1906 – very unlike the deluge of commercial messages today.

In looking up information about Chronicle Mills, I made the happy discovery that the Mills, abandoned by the end of the 20th century, had been repurposed as an urban apartment complex.

On-line, one can find photographs of the former mill and a drawing of the attractive re-use of the abandoned structure.
