Uncle Hiram Sends a Christmas Cat – Circa 1910

I believe that Jacob K. Bechtel was a boy when his Uncle Hiram gave to him a Christmas postcard.

The illustration of a cat surrounded by flowers seems, to me, to be the kind of postcard you would give a child.

The genealogical data suggests that Jacob was about 3 years old.

The postcard was not mailed, so we do not have any clues as to the location of Jacob and his Uncle Hiram from the reverse.

Uncle Hiram did inscribe Jacob’s full name and his own, Hiram Garman.

Fortunately, Hiram K. Garmen and his nephew, Jacob Bechtel, can be found in genealogy data-bases.

The families of Uncle Hiram and young Jacob lived in the beautiful rural area around Mount Joy, Pennsylvania.

Lacking a postmark, we can assume from the style of the postcard that it was printed circa 1910.

The illustration, by the unknown postcard artist, was printed in Germany.

Because it was preserved in good condition for more than 110 years, we may infer that the postcard was treasured by Jacob as a Christmas souvenir.
