This beautiful Christmas postcard was copyright by Sander and printed circa 1910.
A Christmas verse, in ornate script, invokes “All Joy” and “All Blessings” on the recipient.
A gilt border, festooned with flowers and bells, surrounds the verse.
The postcard was not mailed; it appears to have been hand-delivered to Mrs. Waldo Hawker.
On the reverse, an address has been inscribed, but it is unclear if this applies to the sender or the recipient.
Both parties may live in St. Johnsbury, a town in northeast Vermont, about 48 miles from the Canadian border.
The name, Martha A. Palmer, seems to be that of the sender.
A message, addressed to Hattie, does not allude to the Holiday, but concerns a “hair receiver”.
(The hair receiver, a small container kept on the dressing table to contain the hair collected from combs or brushes, became popular in the Victorian Era.)
Martha writes that she “will send your hair receiver this week with your mother”.
It may be that the hair receiver, often an ornamented ceramic or metallic object, was a Christmas present.
In any event, one hopes that Martha, Hattie, and Hattie’s mother enjoyed a wonderful holiday.
