Bess Sends Greetings from Odebolt – circa 1908

Miss Minnie Petersen (possibly, Pedersen) lived in Rapidan, a community in Blue Earth County of south-central Minnesota.

Sometime near 1908 (the postmark is obliterated), Minnie received a lovely postcard from Bess.

Bess mailed the postcard from Odebolt, a community in west-central Iowa.

Odebolt was platted in 1877 when the Chicago & Northwestern Railroad extended to the area.

It is 180 miles from Odebolt to Rapidan.

The face of the postcard is a fine painting of vase of greens standing on a cloth-covered table.

It seems to be winter scene, as the vase holds sprigs of fir and holly.

There is no printed legend to suggest that this was a Christmas greeting.

This example of postcard art was published by the American News Company of New York.

The postcard was made in Germany.

The words “Greetings from Odebolt” are applied in glitter.

The glitter did, as it often does, mar the face of the postcard with pock-marks.

Nevertheless, the glittery letters are prized as they provide the only indication of where Bess mailed the greeting.

I made digital repairs to the face.

Minnie seems to have enjoyed the postcard art as the card was preserved for more than a century.

One hopes that Bess and Minnie remained friends and correspondents for many years.
