Planning the County Fair – Bradford, Vermont (1874)

Mr. Henry Whicher (Henry Whitcher, see below) had lived in Newbury, a town on the Connecticut River in Orange County of east-central Vermont.

By June of 1874, Mr. Whicher had moved to South Ryegate – it is unclear if this was a visit, an excursion, or a permanent move.

South Ryegate, a town on the Wells River in Caledonia County of east-central Vermont, was settled by Scots farmers at the end of the 18th century.

At the end of the 19th century, the town was enriched by the business of numerous mills.

(South Ryegate is about 5 miles northwest of Newbury.)

In the summer of 1874, Mr. Whicher received in South Ryegate a postcard that had been forwarded from his previous address in Newbury.

The postcard was printed by the US Post Office and it featured a decorative border and a stamp with the profile of Martha Washington.

On the reverse, Mr. Whicher is summoned to the next meeting of the Orange County Agricultural Society.

It seems that Mr. Whicher was a Director or Officer of the Society.

The purpose of the meeting was to make arrangements for a Fair.

(The Orange County Fair was established in 1847, and was held initially in a rotation of towns)

The meeting agenda included, “renting grounds, appointing Judges, and arranging premium list.”

One hopes that Mr. Whicher was able to participate in the meeting, that the matters before the Society were resolved satisfactorily, and that the County Fair was an enormous success.

“Henry Whitcher” can be found on-line, and I believe that this is the person to whom the postcard was addressed.
