The Pet Chicken

The Pet Chicken (1906)

Sometime around 1906, Olive Bealler received a handsome postcard print of a child with a pet chicken.

We are not given any information about Olive; her name is inscribed lightly on the reverse of the postcard.

This original postcard art was copyrighted and published by the James Lee Co.

It is a charming drawing; the child, in overalls and sturdy shoes, holds the chicken and contemplates a large egg.

I don’t know if many children made pets of chickens, but this large fowl seems to be treated affectionately.

Olive seems to have enjoyed the postcard; it has survived in good condition for 115 years.
